There's a lot said about personal numberplates - whether they're actually quite sad, and if so, just how sad. However, what is, without question, rather sad is to have a plate that's linked to your make of car - that doesn't QUITE have the spelling right. Take, for example, the Lotus Elise I saw last night, with a plate that spelled out "Ealse". You can then compound the sadness even more by being overtaken in your Ealse by a clapped-out Ford Fiesta with a cloud of black smoke coming out the back of it. There are many, many high performance cars around my neck of the woods this weekend, for Goodwood, but I suspect i've seen the prize plum already.
